opportunity

Thompson Design Group changed the face of Boston in the 1970s, as architects for the redevelopment of Faneuil Hall Marketplace – which became a model of development replicated throughout the world. Thompson is also know the world over for other landmarks such as the Navy Pier in Chicago and the groundbreaking retailer “Design Research” in Cambridge MA. In 1999 they hired Schwadesign to change the face of Thompson Design Group. They wanted to ensure their considerations for space and urban planning were conveyed in their new identity; when they plan to design a place, their focus is on gatherings – such as an urban ‘square’ (in Boston this has particular relevance, since there are nearly 36 such squares). Their previous wordmark didn’t convey this sensibility.

Schwadesign solution

We took the ‘square’ notion literally, and created a mark that allows for interpretation: is it an architects’ T-square? a point and line? a face? tree and bench? Yes.
