opportunity

The Samuels Sinclair Dental Center at the Rhode Island Hospital provides high quality dental care to underprivileged children, special needs children, adults with developmental disabilities, medical residents, and post-doctoral fellows. In 2006, the Hospital wanted to promote the 75-year legacy of its dental center, and initially hired Schwa to research and develop a “history wall” timeline to celebrate the lineage of the Center. Part of the challenge was creating a memorable installation that some of its special-needs clients could comprehend. Naturally, Schwadesign gave the hospital some ideas to chew on.

Schwadesign solution

At the hospital’s annual Founders Day celebration in October 2006, the Samuels Sinclair Dental Center was featured prominently. Instead of creating a linear timeline wall installation, Schwa created a hanging mobile that creatively illustrates the history of the center. It also enabled promotion of recent major donors by integrating their logos.

Following these initial efforts, the hospital staff was impressed and asked Schwa to generate more ideas. Schwa created an interactive installation for kids to learn about teeth and oral health. We created a “Miles of Smiles” audio CD, composed of music about smiles, including a song donated by artist Rickie Lee Jones, and a historical slideshow presentation with images culled by Schwa. We even wrote the speech delivered by the Dental Center’s Executive Director at this prestigious event.
