Using buildings' architecture to inform icon design

opportunity

Breathe new life into, but don’t interfere with the greatness of the I.M. Pei plaza headquarters of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. Simultaneously activate the space visually so there’s a sense of progress while traversing the space. Educate the public about Mary Baker Eddy, highlight the Mapparium, make the Sunday School feel more friendly.

Schwadesign solution

In collaboration with George Bird of B+B Design. We designed an icon system based on each building’s architecture. We created a flexible system of image applications to work with functional signs (parking, wayfinding) as well as cultural and educational signs (events, lectures, notices). Working with master planner Samina Quraeshi, we enlivened the Sunday school through an exterior treatment of interior activities. More foot traffic and longer visits coincided with the Church’s own redesigning of the Eddy Library and re-opening of the Mapparium.
